Assignment:
Evidence based policing is a method used by law enforcement for policy making and too help guide department's with making decision. Some of the key elements of evidence based policing include collecting statistical data, combined with the use of a variety of different research and scientific testing methods to aid with day to day policy making decisions within departments.
The elements of evidence based policing is related to the criminal justice system in many ways and stretches across a multitude of criminal justice organization "Research investigating criminal justice and criminology related questions relies on many theories, including criminological, sociological, and psychological theories" (Bachman, & Schutt, 2018). By using these types of research methods law enforcement agencies can gain an understanding of what type of individual commits certain crimes.
Evidence based policing is being used in a multitude of ways. in my opinion one of the most know and best applications of evidence based policing is the use of the Uniform Crime Report (UCR). Although there are potential weaknesses in the system i feel that having law enforcement agencies keep a recored of " offenses most likely reported to the police" (Mosher, Miethe, & Hart, 2011) can be used as an affective tool for law enforcement to see which types of crimes that happen in a certain jurisdiction.
To convince a law enforcement agency that isn't using evidence based policing to use it, I would give them a list of benefits in an effort to convince them. I would explain that by using evidence based policing it would help target resources to areas most needed to combat crime in our district, I would also mention the budget reduction by targeting those resources. I would also mention the fact that using evidence based policing could lead to the overall goal which is crime reduction.
