Problem: Godliness and Research

Research sometimes gets a bad rap from Christians who suggest that we should just read the Bible and that is the only source of knowledge we need. Certainly we should believe in the authority of the Bible and see it as God's revelation of truth. However, consider that if science is true science, it's purpose is to seek to know more about God's creation, including people. We also know the world we live in isn't the Garden of Eden and we are a fallen people in a fallen world. Additionally, the Bible cannot and does not address every aspect of knowledge. It says nothing about genetics, or the chemical composition of water. Nor does it explain everything about human behavior. These are things we can discover through research.

Additionally, it is sometimes suggested that research is used to manipulate facts (rather than report them) and can be used to then discredit the scriptures. There is some merit to this concern. Sometimes the research itself has flaws and is conducted by imperfect people. More often, it is the interpretation of the research that is flawed and viewed through human bias.

These concerns do not discredit research. Rather, they help remind us of the importance to conduct it as well as we can which is largely the focus of this course.

For this discussion, find at least two scriptures that support the principle and practice of research. These might be scriptures regarding seeking truth, or examples where someone found truth outside scripture.
Additionally, discuss how a Christian can be a researcher in such a way that is actually reflective of Christian principles and not in opposition to God's will and scripture. Be sure to think through these two items carefully and don't give a shallow answer. Your discussion should be at least 250 words (not including scripture references) and include at least two replies to other students that contribute to the discussion (usually at least 100 words). Be respectful of other's views even though you are free to disagree with them.

Remember, this discussion has two parts:

(1) Scriptural discussion of the research;

(2) Discussion of how a Christian can be pleasing to God in conducting research.
