Report on a hypothetical or real child maltreatment case

Problem:

The signature assignment requires students to synthesize knowledge to develop a comprehensive investigative report on a hypothetical or real child maltreatment case. Students will apply legal standards, interviewing, and investigative techniques to analyze the case and assess the evidence. Students will also provide a description of the court process relevant to the case and ethical considerations.

Assignment Instructions

The assignment is divided into four sections:

Case Summary (20%)

Develop a hypothetical child maltreatment case (physical, sexual, emotional, and/or neglect), or you can describe a real child maltreatment case (NOT found in the textbook), make sure to cite the appropriate source Include victim demographics (age, gender, etc.), the alleged perpetrator and relationship to the victim, type(s) of abuse and key indicators, and how the maltreatment was discovered (e.g., school report, medical exam, witness statement).

Investigative Process (30%): Provide a description of the investigative steps taken:

Interviewing Techniques: Describe who should be interviewed as part of the investigation and why. Since your primary witness is the child victim, include the interviewing techniques you would use to conduct a forensic interview. Provide a description of the composition of the child interview. Also, include any other important factors (not covered in the textbook) to consider as part of the interview process.

Evidence Collection: What type of documentation would you use? What evidence would you gather, and what techniques would you use to collect the evidence?

Legal Process (20%): Explain whether the case is criminal, civil, or both. Provide a description of whether charges are made or not, and the subsequent steps or court process in the case.

Ethical Considerations (20%): What ethical concerns might arise regarding the child's privacy and the need to share information with other agencies? How would you handle conflicts between parental rights and child safety? Discuss the ethical balance between obtaining an account of the maltreatment and avoiding re-traumatization. What techniques uphold the child's well-being? How can an investigator's personal bias (e.g., socioeconomic, cultural, or implicit bias) affect their judgment in a child maltreatment case? What strategies can investigators use to mitigate bias and ensure objectivity?

Organization and APA formatting (10%)
