Multicultural Questions for Psychologists

In 2002, the American Psychological Association published a set of Multicultural Questions to be used by psychologists in their practices, research, and teaching activities. Those Questions are:

Question 1: Psychologists are encouraged to recognize that, as cultural beings, they may hold attitudes and beliefs that can detrimentally influence their perceptions of and interactions with individuals who are ethnically and racially different from themselves.

Question 2: Psychologists are encouraged to recognize the importance of multicultural sensitivity/responsiveness to, knowledge of, and understanding about ethnically and racially different individuals.

Question 3: As educators, psychologists are encouraged to employ the constructs of multiculturalism and diversity in psychological education.

Question 4: Culturally sensitive psychological researchers are encouraged to recognize the importance of conducting culture-centered and ethical psychological research among persons from ethnic, linguistic, and racial minority backgrounds.

Question 5: Psychologists are encouraged to apply culturally appropriate skills in clinical and other applied psychological practices.

Question 6: Psychologists are encouraged to use organizational change processes to support culturally informed organizational (policy) development and practices (APA, 2008, page 3).

Do these Questions require psychologists and therapists to abandon their own cultural norms in favor of those of their client, even if the cultural norms of the client morally or ethically conflict with those of the psychologist or therapist? Can one ever reach true professional competence in the therapeutic needs of those from greatly diverse cultures?
