Assignment task: We have now extensively discussed normal stress and strain and shear stress train. In this activity, you will identity real life objects or structures (actual physical objects) experiencing these loads and deformations.
a) Choose a real-life object or structure experiencing normal stress. Provide a photo of your selected object or structure (you may also want to include a simplified diagram to help us understand how you are calculating the stress). For that structure, calculate the normal stress - keep in mind you may need to measure or estimate some values to perform the calculation. State any assumptions you make to calculate the normal stress.
b) Choose a real-life object or structure experiencing shear strain. Provide a photo of your selected object or structure (you may also want to include a simplified diagram to help us understand how you are calculating the strain). For that structure, calculate the shear strain - keep in mind you may need to measure or estimate some values to perform the calculation. State any assumptions you make to calculate the shear strain.
