When reading about self-concept and self-esteem during adolescence, it made sense to me during this period of life. Adolescence is when we really start to form what makes us who we are. Self-concept is how adolescents view their character traits, abilities, and sense of identity (Feldman, 2017). Self-esteem is how they view themselves, and whether they judge themselves to have a positive or negative connotation. Teens develop more complex thinking skills and are able to analyze themselves. Comparing their skill sets and who they think they are to those around them.
Growing up as adolescents in society today, with social media and AI bubble filters give ideas on what is popular, what body looks best, who has the "prettiest" features, or who is "winning" at life. Some teens may feel pressured to follow trends or present themselves as what society may accept as "normal" online. Whether posting online or not can affect their self-esteem and how they perceive themselves next to others.
Social media was not around when I was growing up in the early 1990s. I believe adolescents were influenced by family, peers, and the culture around them. My father was my biggest influence growing up because I was raised by a single parent with many rules and requirements. I always felt restricted when I compared my home life to my friends'. His leadership helped shape who I am today, for the betterment of myself, with discipline.
Identity was another issue when growing up with biracial parents, and I was surrounded by Caucasian influences with Jewish culture. Sometimes I felt I was not seen for who I truly was. I faced ignorance from other kids my age and adults. Because of these encounters, I would say my self-concept was blurred, and I had low self-esteem as an adolescent.
