Question1

Assume you have a furnace wall that is constructed of two types of brick. The temperatures of inner and outer surfaces of the wall are 600 degree Celsius and 460 degree Celsius respectively (inner is 10cm thick and outer layers is 10cm thick). The charge of thermal conductivity for the inner layer of the wall is 0.8 and that for outer layer is 1.6.

1. Establish the temperature at the interface, I, between the layers, in the steady state.

2. Plan and label a graph which shows the variation of temperature with distance across wall.

Question2

An aluminium engine operating at 300°C is cooled by circulating water over the end of engine where the water absorbs enough energy to boil. The cooling interface has a surface area of 0.525 m² and a thickness of 1.50 cm. if water enters the cooling interface of the engine at 100°C how much water must boil per minute to cool engine?
