Q. Settlement due to Increasing Load on Surrounding Soil?
When any portion of the ground surface has been loaded, it causes the surface of adjacent soil also to tilt and settle. The amount,of tilt will depend on the nature and type of subsoil. If subsoil consists of soft clay, the effect of the weight of a new structure on the neighbouring structure can be quite high. It may cause extra settlement due to old structure. Such tilt may not be detrimental to the structure.
