Consider these two events:
{My name is Shirley}
{The rain is falling}
Are these events related to each other? No. My name has no effect on the weather and the fact that it's raining has no effect on my name.
Two events are independent if the occurrence (or non-occurrence) of one event does not affect the likelihood of the occurrence of the other event. If one event does affect the occurrence of the other event, the events are dependent.
Probability of Independent Events
Events A and B are independent if and only if P(A∩B) = P(A) X P(B).
