Facing Materials: These materials when added to the moulding sand tend to obtain smoother and cleaner surfaces of castings, help easy peeling of sand from the casting surface during shake out and prevent metal penetration. Sea coal, pitch (distilled from soft coals), asphalt, graphite and silica flour discussed above, act as facing materials.
