When you add together positive and negative numbers, there are essentially three possibilities that you can encounter. Let's examine all of these one case at a time:
Positive + Positive
A positive number added to a positive number is always a positive number. The addition is then done in the exact same way that you have added positive numbers in the past. For example:
3 + 5 = 8
21 + 16 = 37
Negative + Negative
A negative number plus a negative number is always a negative number. The addition is done by adding the digits, and then making your answer negative in the end. For example:
-4 + (-9) = -(4+9) = -13
-32 + (-43) = -(32+43) = -75
Positive + Negative or Negative + Positive
Both of these combinations can give you either a positive or a negative result. In other words, your final answer can be either positive or negative, depending on what the two actual numbers are that you're adding together. In order to add this combination together, you will need to subtract the smaller number from the larger one.
