1. A police officer has the ability to make decisions on the actions of others. This can take place where the law allows the officer to have "discretion". Describe a circumstance where the officer has at least two alternatives as to what his actions would be. Describe the factors that guided his decision in those alternatives.

2. Police officers are offered frequently discounts and "freebees". Some organizations may allow this as long as the discount is affordable to others as well. (10% off to all City Employees, etc.). In some cases, a Chief may prohibit officers from utilizing those services in order to eliminate the look of favoritism, gratuities, on the take, etc. What is your opinion on these two examples?

Unit 6 (select one (1)):

1. Public versus private policing, what are some of the issues that may arise in regards to the regulating of the private police departments?

2. There are many situations in which the police function is provided by a private security agency, such as colleges, hospitals, corporations, housing authorities, etc. Thinking about the college setting where the campus is a small "community", how effective can they be if they do not have the right of arrest, allowed to carry weapons, etc.? What can they do to put some "meat" into their authority?

Unit 7 (select one (1)):

1. Community Policing is a concept that creates a partnership with the community. With this concept do you feel officers should move from the cruiser to the foot patrols? Why?

2. Explain how crime analysis is a big part of community policing?

Unit 8 (select one (1)):

1. Define and explain "NCIC" and "CODIS"

2. Criminals are using technology more and more, and in some cases, their innovativeness creates a problem whereas laws are not already in place to address these. What, in your opinion, can be done to lessen the gap between these?
