Public fear of criminal victimization

Assignment Task:

According to a vast body of research, the high level of violence in the media increases the public's fear of criminal victimization. It is common that crime material is a prominent element of the media and distorts the reality of crime by disproportionately emphasizing random violent crimes.

Social media posts include real-time data previously used to forecast social trends. Over 70 days, many tweets were collected from Latin America's 18 major Spanish-speaking countries. These tweets are then identified as related to crime or not, and additional information is retrieved, such as the sort of crime and, when feasible, any Geo-location information at a city level. According to the examination of the obtained data, around 15 out of every 1000 tweets contain content relating to a crime or fear of crime. As documented in surveys, the number of murders, the murder rate, and the level of fear of crime are then compared to the frequency of tweets relating to crime. The findings suggest that, like other forms of mass media such as newspapers, social media has a substantial bias towards violent or sexual offenses. Furthermore, there is no strong link between social media posts and crime. As a result, social media is demonstrated to be ineffective at detecting crime trends; instead, what they show reflects the amount of fear of crime.
