1. One major drawbacks of team decision making is “groupthink”. The Space Shuttle Challenger disaster was caused by faulty O-rings. The O-Ring problem was identified by engineers but ignored due to pressures to launch on time. It was a classic example of “group think”.

Watch the short video on “groupthink” in this situation.

2. Also, watch the following for short video for some very good ideas on ways making good group decisions.

3. Another drawback of group work is “Social Loafing”, the tendency of group members to work less hard than if they were working alone. You have probably seen this on your college campus or in church or community groups. There may be many members on the team or in the club but only a few members do all the work. The others pull back and allow the few to carry the load.- How would define “groupthink” and “social loafing” in your own words?

– Where have you seen examples of these behaviors? Give an example from your workplace or an organization you were in (including this college).

– What do you think are the causes of these behaviors?

– What could you do as a leader or a member of a group to prevent these behaviors?
