• Provide your first impression of Gans' argument. Do you agree or disagree with it? What parts, if any, do you find problematic?
• Does Gans imply that we cannot have a harmonious and functioning society without poverty? In the absence of poverty, would all of social necessities disappear? Or would they be replaced?
• Review the basic assumptions of conflict theory, and then provide a Conflict theorist's rebuttal to the points discussed by Gans. How would Gans' argument be interpreted through a conflict lens? How would a conflict theorist understand the presence of poverty in society?
