Assignment Title - Applications of Error Control Codes

Purpose of the assessment (with ULO Mapping) - This assignment is designed to provide students opportunities to develop skills related to the following learning outcomes:

a. Apply the principles used in the generation, transmission and reception of digitally modulated signals;

b. Explain the need for sampling and analogue to digital conversion and source coding;

c. Compare and apply digital modulation and demodulation techniques, channel coding, decoding and their performance;

d. Compare multiple input and multiple output systems in modern digital communication systems;

Purpose of the assessment: The purpose of this assignment is to understand the different types of error control coding and their applications, develop skills on information gathering, write technical reports.

Description of the assessment:

1. Background

Source coding has become an integral part of modern communication systems. For instance, the cellular communication systems use source coding to compress data and to save the transmit power. The choice of specific data compression technique depends on the application and data type.

This assignment exposes the student to investigate real world applications of source coding techniques, which is a key part of digital communication. In doing so the student will develop skills to understand real world requirements, critically review the existing techniques and write a technical report based on his or her investigation.

2. Requirements

This assignment has two parts.

Part A addresses the following two areas:

Understanding the types of data compression techniques and their applications: Student is required write about

a. Different types of data compression techniques

b. Popular applications for each type code and reason/s.

Part B allows students to achieve experience of collecting data and compress them using Huffman code.

a) Ask minimum 20 people about their favourite colour and make a table.

b) Now that you have the frequency distribution of people's favourite colour, you have to generate binary code for each colour using Huffman code.

c) Assume a social media app needs to store favourite colour of millions of people. If they are stored using your Huffman code what will be the code efficiency? What is the entropy of the data source?

d) What is error control coding? Provide a literature review of different types of error-control coding schemes and classifications.
