Problem:
Jacob is a nursing student assigned to care for Ms. LaPlante, a 32-year-old woman who is status post a right total knee replacement (TKR). Ms. LaPlante underwent the TKR as a result of a cycling accident that caused irreparable damage to her knee joint.
After surgery, Ms. LaPlante is transferred to the orthopedic unit, where she is placed on a broad-spectrum antibiotic to help the knee heal. She experiences a productive cough, chills, and a fever of 102° F (oral) shortly after being transferred to the orthopedic unit. In addition, her knee is swollen, beefy red, and oozes yellow-green pus from the incision site. Jacob cultures the pus and sends it to the laboratory per Ms. LaPlante's surgeon's orders. The results indicate that Ms. LaPlante has contracted methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
