Prompt:

Part A. Identifications: Please identify, and explain/describe of the significance of ALL of the following concepts for the purposes of this class. In a bullet point/number format, think of 2-3 short sentences for each:

1. Sykes-Picot
2. Histadrut
3. Czech Arms Deal
4. Nakba
5. Anglo-Iranian Oil Company
6. Hussein-McMahon Correspondence
7. Render State
8. Vilayati-i Faqih
9. Fatwa
10. Yishuv

Part B. (Total of Three pages) Pick 2 of the following 3 questions and answer them in limes or so! Use peer-reviewed journal articles to strengthen your arguments! ANSWER EACH AT A TIME TIME SEPARATELY AND NOT IN ONE LONG ANSWER).

1. What is Zionism? Provide a historical context for its emergence. Compare/contrast the significant roles of of David Ben Gurion and Chaim Weizmann in Palestine and outside of Palestine.

2. What is the difference between the "Right of Return" and the "Law of Return" as we studied them in the class. Provide a historical context for each, and provide me with a coherent, well-cited, and an informed argument as to why these concepts should be juxtaposed and studied.

3. How can studying the colonial conquest of the Middle East (broadly defined, so you can start from wherever you think is most appropriate for your argument) allow us to understand/explain much of the contemporary politics of the region?

I would have liked to see you discuss the five concepts as a theme and not just as isolated concepts-what brings them all together? Your paper jumps around between ideas a lot in the first half. Next time, I would spend some time outlining your argument and making sure that everything you write comes back to the main idea you are trying to support. I would also re-examine the idea of fundamentalism and how it is colored by Orientalism.
