Progress monitoring is essential for interventions to be adjusted and impactful. Depending on the system, progress may monitor reading, behavior, or both. When student progress is monitored, their performance is repeatedly measured. As students receive Tier I, Tier II, or Tier III interventions, the assessment data from progress monitoring will allow educators to see whether the interventions are working or not (Honig, Diamond, & Gutlohn, 2018). If students do not show growth, the intervention may need adjusted to better fit the students' needs. If students are still not growing after adjustments have been made, they may be moved to Tier II or Tier III intervention. Similarly, if students make large amounts of growth, they can be moved back to Tier I or Tier II, depending on where they were at previously. Thus, progress monitoring is extremely important in gathering whether a student is getting the instruction and tools that they need to become successful readers, students, and people. MTSS and RTI are prevention and intervention systems placed in school settings to set students up for success. They both include three tiers of intervention for reading and/or behavior. Tier I is given to all students and takes place in the general education classroom, Tier II is given to around 15% of students that are considered at-risk in small groups, and Tier III is given to around 5% of students and is provided by a specialist rather than general education teacher (Hougen & Smartt, 2020).
