Whether succession is primary or secondary, in terrestrial or aquatic ecosystems, the basic processes involved in succession are similar. There are a number of sequential steps in succession.

These steps or processes are:

1. Nudation;
2. Invasion or migration;
3. Ecesis;
4. Aggregation;
5. Competition,
6. Reaction; and
7. Stabilisation - climax.
