Good evening everyone, One type of consultation I am interested in exploring more is peer consultation. As I am continuing in my professional career, I am finding myself more interested in peer consultation. Miu et al. (2022) explored the increased demands experienced by psychologists before and after the dynamic as it could lead to increased burnout and feeling isolated. They identified a lack of structured opportunities for individuals to gain peer consultation. Peer consultation is recommended by the American Psychological Association as a way to address personal and professional challenges. This is a relationship that is non-hierarchical and non-evaluative, which can help to facilitate a safe trusting environment. Peer consultation groups tend to be small with four to six individuals that share responsibilities of leading and give room to discuss clinical cases, process emotional reactions, address counter transference. Additionally, it can help to increase self care and self compassion. It can be challenging to facilitate such groups due to time constraints, limited access to others to join, ethical issues of confidentiality, biases towards personal clinical experience than research or colleague advice, fears of judgement, and challenges with group dynamics.
