When I think of the "Ideal Family," the first place my mind goes is to the Nuclear Family, a 20th-century ideal of a family, consisting of parents and children residing together in one home. It's not because I think that is perfect; it's just something I heard a million times growing up. I don't believe there can ever be an "ideal family" because no family is perfect, and no one type of family meets the standards of another. All that can be done is to work to better the lives of those within the family, to reach for idealism. What disrupts a family more than the removal of a provider, a caretaker? One of the most prominent discriminatory institutions that affects families is the Criminal Justice System. Our CRJS is deeply skewed in who is prosecuted and who isn't. Black and Latino men are more targeted than any other demographic. Removing the provider of a family instantly affects how that family survives, financially and emotionally. This would primarily relate to conflict theory, which holds that those in power control others through inequality. The Criminal Justice System is a heavy burden on anyone who deals with it, as it is financially draining, time-consuming, and emotionally stressful.
