This pathway originates in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and connects to the nucleus accumbens and the prefrontal cortex, which are brain regions responsible for reward, motivation, and impulse control. Dopamine is released when a person experiences something pleasurable, and this reinforces the behavior and makes the brain want to repeat it. This system is necessary for normal motivation; however, when dopamine activity becomes too high, it can lead to impulsive and compulsive behaviors. This overactivation is seen in addictive and impulse-related disorders, where individuals continue behaviors regardless of knowing the negative consequences (Stahl, 2021). Impulsivity occurs when the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for judgment and self-control, is not able to properly regulate the reward system.
