Growing up loving Barbie, I was super excited to watch the Barbie movie, but somehow never got around to watching it. But given the strong raves and critiques from feminist media, I was fairly surprised by Jessie Gender's take on it. In the video, Jessie argued that the Barbie movie shows one-sided feminism that mainly reflects the experiences of white, middle-class women. This is a typical approach to American feminism, where women of color don't have the same exposure, even though they face more obstacles than white women. The fact that I didn't see the movie, I can't give my honest opinion on whether Jessie's take was valid, but if the take is remotely correct, then I must say I agree. If the film avoided deeper issues dealing with race, class, and other inequalities that affect all women differently, the overall message is shallow, focusing more on being marketable and feel-good than on offering truth about intersectional feminism. Questioning Gender explains that the media usually favors certain gender identities and makes them seem normal, while others are pushed aside. Need Assignment Help?
