Problem regarding disruptions in supply chains


Problem: Port of New York and New Jersey is the third largest port in the US by trade volume, and plays a critical role in the first mile delivery operations of many international companies. Recent disruptions in supply chains are partly due to congested ports, according to the socials at the Port of New York and New Jersey. To address the problem, they want to study how the containers carrying goods are processed in a typical month at the port. The containers are brought in by container ships, each of which can carry up to 20,000 containers. Depending on the types of items they carry, the container ships might arrive at different terminals of the port. However, the socials are only interested in the aggregate number of containers that need to be processed. The containers arrive on container ships at a rate of 36,000 containers/day, starting in the beginning of the month and continuing until the end of the 17th day of the month. Because of all the safety precautions that were implemented due to COVID-19, the containers cannot be processed for the first 3 days of the month.
