The Office of the Foster Care Ombudsperson is an independent part of the California Department of Social Services (COSS). Its job is to take complaints, look into them, find solutions, and improve the lives of foster children.

Requirements for the position:

Skills and knowledge

Principles, practices, and trends of public and business administration, management, and supportive staff services, such as budgets, personnel, and management analysis; government functions and organization; and methods and techniques of effective conference leadership.

Ability to: Reason logically and creatively and use a variety of analytical techniques to solve complex governmental and managerial problems; come up with and evaluate different options; analyze data and present ideas and information effectively both orally and in writing; consult with and give advice to administrators or other interested parties on a wide range of topics; gain and keep the trust and cooperation of those with whom they work;

A "Statement of Qualifications". The Statement is a narrative discussion of how the candidate's education, training, experience, and skills qualify them for the position. The Statement serves as documentation of each candidate's ability to present information clearly and concisely in writing and must be typed and not more than two pages in length, no less than 12 point font, and address the following questions:

1. Based on the duty statement and your own experience please describe what excites you about this position, and how your education, experience, and skills make you the best candidate for this role? What diversity and inclusion training or experience do you possess and how will you apply it within this position?

2. This position has direct phone contact with people who have experienced trauma and individuals who are in distress, please describe your experience interacting people experiencing these type of challenges. Please give an example of how you have de-escalated a someone, or describe how you would do so if called upon to do so.

3. Much of the work of the office is performed individually. However the OFCO fosters a collaborative, supportive, learning environment. Please describe what good teaming means to you and provide examples of how you demonstrate it.
