Problem: Mr. Murphy is admitted electively to the orthopaedic ward for knee arthroscopy. As part of his admission bloodwork, his alanine transaminase (ALT) is noted to be slightly elevated at 85 IU/L (normal range: 4-40 IU/L). You note on his admission clerking under his social history that he has previously injected recreational drugs. The admitting doctor sent a full panel of bloodwork for viral hepatitis. The following day, during the ward round, the consultant surgeon wants you to interpret the returned laboratory results, as they have no interpretative comments attached to them.
