Problem based on research methods and project management

Assignment Topic: IOT

Need Aim and literature review:

1. Aim/Research question

Produce a summary of what your project will try to achieve in one or two sentences, ideally construct a research question, (Identify the central phenomenon/thing you plan to explore in your question what you are going to describe, explore, generate, discover, understand).

2 Background, Motivation and Relevance

  • Outline and critically discuss what relevant research has been undertaken, in the past, in your area of interest and why this project is necessary. This should come from literature, journal articles, conference papers etc.
  • Outline and critically discuss why the research will be of value, in the future, and what the anticipated impact the outcomes can have.
  • Outline why you want to undertake this work, some areas to consider are, personal motivation, skills set and career choices.
  • Set out and justify, using supporting literature, where your work will fit in the computing body of knowledge.

o Here you should construct a body of knowledge diagram, see lecture week 2 for an example.

3 Scope, Objectives and Risk

  • Outline and justify the scope of your project - what you intend to do, what you will not include but might be expected by others to be incorporated.
  • Outline numbered steps (SMART Objectives) you will have to complete in order to achieve the aims. After each objective outline the deliverable or outcome that will be produced. Outline how you will assess and or measure the quality for that objective. Outline what research method/design you will adopt for each objective and how each method will support one another. See lecture week 2 for an example; also see the examples of excellence provided on blackboard under the assessment tab.
  • Produce a task list for all objectives that defines, task, deliverable, resources (all types) required, skills required, time required.
  • Produce a risk log (see example on your Blackboard Assessment tab)
  • Identify and justify a journal where your work would be relevant for publication.
  • Identify aspects of the standards for publication in the target journal that you can incorporate into your project, so for example the referencing system, font style etc.
  • Identify, justify and critically discuss any authors, journals where previous relevant research has been published within the last 5 years. There is no fix number; it is your judgment to scope this listing.

4 Ethics, Legal, Social, Security and Professional Issues

Write out a section that discusses, explores and defines all of the ethical, legal, social and professional issues associated with your project, including how you will consider security issues. If you think an area of this section is not applicable to your project, you should justify why it is not relevant.

4.1 Ethics Issues

Ethical issues can involve religion, philosophical paradigms, moral responsibilities, customs/cultural, societal beliefs, self-conscience and professional rules and regulations. You can find professional bodies such as ACM, IEEE have a code of ethics. Decisions made in computing can affect the performance and functionality of computer systems, which in turn affect the welfare of the systems' users directly and that of others less directly. Qgunlere and Adebayo (2015)

4.2 Social Issues

Social issues can cross over with ethical issues and there are many examples such as mobile apps and social interaction changes, freedom of speech and the internet, gathering of a nation against governments (Arab Spring and social media, 2010-2012)

4.3 Security Issues

All systems carry security issues, computer vulnerabilities, security issues can be inadvertently designed into a product or preventative measures not be prescribed, have weak compliance elements, systems may not be used in the way they should be or for their original purpose.

4 Professional Issues

What is a professional is a term which many have debated but it is agreed it is a personal with high-level skills, they possess access to a complex body of knowledge and he or she practices these skills in a manner which is expected within a professional body. ~The public expect a professional to understand what can go wrong, prevent what can go wrong and if an error occurs, they understand how to put right the wrong.

5 Schedule of Activities

Using your task list, construct a Gantt chart and a Monitoring and Control table (see examples given your Blackboard Assessment tab.

Each objective can be broken down into more than one task.

6 Reference List

References: these should be primarily used to support your background section and include the latest relevant research in your chosen topic area. All references in the reference list must also appear within the body of the report. There is no ideal number of references recommended but a guide might be no less than 10 - 15 sources should be used.
