How to respond my classmate's discussion question. When working with a child and their parents the focus would be on the child's well being while maintaining a professional role. If it was a scenario that the parents behavior is negatively effecting th child I would address the behavior without assigning blame on either parents. I would address things I have observed with the parents by using empath and providing education on how relationship and family dynamics work. Counselors should act in the clients best interest while respecting the rights of all involved (ACA,2014). If parents don't process in therapy to gain tools to change, i would still provide the child with coping skills, emotional support and safe environment to express feelings.
