Problem:
My name is Micah and I'm currently working full time in construction while finishing my Business degree. Most of my time is split between job sites and school work, so I see a lot of different people and perspectives every day. Long term, I want to move into leadership roles where I can manage projects and teams and eventually build something of my own. To me, race is a social construct because it's something society created, not something rooted in biology. People may look different on the outside, but genetically we're extremely similar. What makes race "real" is how society treats those categories. Growing up and now working in construction, I've seen how assumptions can shape how people are viewed or spoken to. Sometimes it's subtle, but it's there. That's what makes me believe race is more about social meaning than science. I think it's important to understand culture and ethnicity because culture shapes how people communicate and think. On job sites, communication is everything. I've worked with crews from different cultural backgrounds, and when you don't understand someone's style or values, things can get misinterpreted fast.
