Question: The tropical snapping shrimp species Synalpheus regalis lives in colonies in coral reef sponges. Large non-reproductive individuals, "defenders", protect the colony against intruders. You set up experimental colonies: control colonies in which the defenders are present, and experimental colonies in which you remove the defender shrimp. In control colonies where 3 defender shrimp are present, 75% of larval shrimp survive to become juveniles, whereas in colonies where the defender shrimp are removed, 10% of larval shrimp reach the juvenile stage.
