Problem:
A vulnerable population in the United States is older adults living with dementia, including Alzheimer's disease and related disorders. Over 6 million Americans aged 65 and older are currently living with Alzheimer's disease, and this number is expected to increase as the population ages (Alzheimer's Association, 2025). This population is vulnerable due to progressive cognitive decline, increased dependence on caregivers, and reduced ability to manage health and safety needs independently. Older adults with dementia often experience multiple chronic conditions, such as hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Cognitive impairment affects memory, judgment, and communication, leading to functional decline and increased risk of injury and poor health outcomes (Livingston et al., 2024). As the disease progresses, many require long-term care, creating emotional, physical, and financial strain on caregivers. Access to healthcare is often inconsistent despite Medicare coverage, with significant gaps in long-term care, home health services, and caregiver support. Johnson et al. (2025) identify key barriers including fragmented care, inadequate coordination, and workforce limitations that reduce continuity of support.
