Prior to beginning work on this assignment, review the article Preparing culturally competent health educators: The development and evaluation of a cultural immersion service-learning program. Consider the characteristics that create a culturally competent health educator.

For this discussion,

1. Select a health education topic.

2. Apply relevant multicultural competencies to two different cultural groups.

• The first group should be based on a cultural background with which you can identify.

• The second group must be one that is based on a different cultural background than the one you identify.

3. Explain at least three competencies that you would need in order to work with each of the two groups.

For example,

• You select obesity programs as your health education topic of interest.

• If you are a 50-year-old, African-American woman living in an urban area, this would mean your first cultural background group could be made up of any one of your similar identifiers, such as African Americans, people age 50 years and older, people in urban areas, or women.

• Your second cultural background would then be made up of an unfamiliar identifiers, such as Hispanics, rural teenagers, Amish men, or children age 6 and under.

• Using this example, this student could examine obesity programs that focus on adults over 50 years of age and children age 6 and under.
