Principle of electric power generation using solar energy

Question 1)a) Describe the necessity, scope, advantages, disadvantages and barriers of renewable energy sources.

b) A flat Plate solar thermal collector is installed on the roof of a hostel (19 7’ N). The collector surface, of total area 32 square meters, is pointing towards south and tilted at an angle of 24 with the horizontal.

i) Compute the angle of incidence of solar beam radiation for December 21st 2009 at LST of 10 am.

ii) with the power density of 0.85 kW/m2, what is the solar power collection at the said time

iii) The water tank of the connected solar thermal system contains 1000 kg of water, initially at 32 C. what will be the temperature of water after 3 hours, assuming constant power collection as in (ii).

Question 2)a) Explain with a neat sketch parabolic trough reflector type of concentrating solar energy collector and list out the advantages and disadvantages of concentrating collectors over flat plate collectors.

b) A domestic SWHS of 100 litres / day capacity is used to generate hot water at 62C replacing conventional electric geyser. If the Solar insolation is 5kWh/ day at ambient temperature of 26C, estimate the required collector area and the payback period. Suppose solar collector is working at 50% efficiency. Efficiency of electric heater is 80%. Cost of electricity / unit is Rs 4/- Cost of SWHS is Rs 32000. Life of SWHS is 15 yrs. Sunny solar days/ yr is 298.

Question 3)a) Describe the principle of electric power generation using solar energy (SPV) and list out the applications, advantages and disadvantages of the same system.

b) Derive expressions for forces on the blades of a propeller type wind turbine system.
