Assessment starts by asking each family member to define their own cultural and religious beliefs separately. That is where respect and inclusion show up. From there, a genogram can show where religious or cultural splits first appeared across generations (Hutchison & Charlesworth, 2024). An ecomap shows whether each member connects to the same support systems or completely different ones. Those tools are where effective support starts. In my work with transition-aged youth I have sat across from a parent whose religious expectation did not match the teenager's cultural identity. That plan only worked because both of their answers ended up in it. The NASW Code of Ethics (2021) says dignity and worth belong to every person. Self-determination does not stop at the parent.
