Prevention and treatment of substance use disorders

Problem: As a student, how do you respond to this classmate of yours, including in text citation and references

Family involvement is very important in both the prevention and treatment of substance use disorders because families can either help protect individuals from substance abuse or contribute to the risk of it developing (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2024). When families develop healthy relationships, they create support, stability, communication, and guidance for individuals experiencing substance use disorders. In contrast, unhealthy family relationships may increase stress, conflict, and negative behaviors that can contribute to substance use. As a counselor in training, it is important to involve family members in treatment to improve the entire family system rather than focusing only on the individual. This concept of homeostasis allows families to maintain balance when one member experiences change (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2024). Additionally, involving families in treatment helps establish structure by creating clear boundaries, flexible roles, open communication, emotional validation, and positive relationships. Families should also develop healthy rules and interactions to provide a supportive environment where individuals feel safe and understood. One inclusive approach is psychoeducation, which encourages family involvement by providing information, enhancing social support, and developing communication and problem-solving skills (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration [SAMHSA], 2020). Another effective approach is Multidimensional Family Therapy (MDFT), which helps reduce family conflict, strengthen emotional attachments, and improve communication. Need Assignment Help?
