In closed status societies, your economic and social status is determined by your birth. This is not true in open societies. In this assignment, you will investigate one moment when a society transitioned from one form to another. You may select from either the end of serfdom in Russia (1860s) or the beginning of the women's suffrage movement in England (late 19th century).
