Body modification such as piercing and tattooing was normally associated with certain sub groups such as pirates and drunkards. After a long history of negative stigmatization, the practice of body modification has become fashionable in the last decade. A recent survey on more than 10,500 people revealed that 10% of the population of England aged 16 and over has some form of body modifications other than the normal in the earlobes. What really is body piercing? According to Ziebolz, Hildebrand and Proff (2011) 'Piercing is the perforation of the skin and underlying tissue, usually for permanently inserting jewellery'. Body piercings found on the earlobe has been very popular dating back from the early 14th century B.C. this form of piercing was done merely for spiritual and aesthetic purposes. However, since recently piercings found on other body parts including the tongue has become popular especially amongst the females in the Western Worlds.
