SUMMARY: This article identifies the personal and sociocultural stress that Chinese students face when attending American universities.Researchers interviewed students and used a prepared questionnaire to obtain information on both personal and sociocultural concerns faced by Chinese students. Interviews were taped and transcribed. Results indicate that cultural shock and isolation are two major issues. Chinese students feel marginalized because of their student visa status. They are not allowed to work legally. Interpersonal relationships seemed superficial. Cultural pressures such as marrying before 30, make long distance relationships difficult. Students are lonely due to the separation from their families, and are afraid to return because this would risk their student visa status. Students acknowledged little knowledge about American people and culture, football for example.
