Predictors of success in psychology doctoral programs


Problem:

The overall results of the study indicated that GRE quantitative scores were not strong predictors of success in psychology doctoral programs and may function as a barrier for capable ethnic minority applicants. The researchers found significant racial and ethnic disparities in GRE quantitative scores. Ethnic minority students generally scored lower on the quantitative section of the GRE compared to White students. However, these lower scores did not correspond to poorer performance in doctoral training. Minority students who were admitted often performed similarly to their peers across multiple indicators of graduate success. The study examined relationships between GRE quantitative scores and several outcomes related to doctoral performance, including: faculty evaluations, research productivity, clinical competence, and overall graduate achievement. The statistical findings showed weak relationships between GRE quantitative scores and these measures of success, suggesting limited predictive validity. In other words, quantitative GRE performance explained little variance in actual doctoral outcomes. The authors also discussed the potential adverse impact of using GRE cutoff scores in admissions decisions. Because minority applicants tended to score lower on average, programs that relied heavily on minimum GRE quantitative thresholds may disproportionately exclude qualified ethnic minority students without substantially improving prediction of academic or professional.
