Power Quality Design Project

This project consists of two parts.

Part 1: Harmonic Filter

A 480 volt motor control center supplies small motors totaling 550 horsepower. The total load on the motor control center is 460 kW and 300 kvar. Because of variable frequency drives, a substantial harmonic content exists in the current, as shown by a power quality analyzer:

Several motors are experiencing rotor overheating due to negative-sequence harmonics.

Design a harmonic filter to alleviate the rotor overheating and correct the power factor.

Model your harmonic filter using simulation software (PSCad, Matlab, etc.) and show the effectiveness of your filter.

Part 2: Transient Voltage Excursion Ride-Through

An industrial facility is experiencing transient voltage excursions (outside the ITI envelope) which are causing critical manufacturing equipment to shut down. A total of 75 kVA of load is being affected by the least serious of the voltage excursions, and a total of 175 kVA of load is affected by the most serious excursions.

The least serious voltage excursions are sags to 75% voltage for 5 seconds.

The most serious voltage excursions are sags to 50% voltage for 0.1 seconds.

Investigate three different technologies to mitigate the voltage excursions so the critical equipment can ride through the disturbances without shutting down. Construct a table showing the advantages and disadvantages of the three technologies you selected. Then recommend one of the three technologies for implementation. State why you selected the technology you did.

Obtain cost estimates for your three technologies. Considering the costs you obtained, either confirm the selection you made, or change your recommendation to another technology.
