Potential complication of an abscess


Case Study: You are looking after 25-year-old Milly Twill on the ward today. Medical history: recent Intra-uterine device (IUD) inserted, occasional migraines. Background: Milly was initially referred from her GP - febrile 38.6o C, with purulent vaginal discharge, dysuria, and severe lower abdominal/ pelvic pain. Tests confirm most likely cause due to C.trachomatis and N.gonorrhoeae. Milly's primary diagnosis is Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID). Due to severity of her symptoms, she has been admitted to hospital. Medications: IV therapy, Doxycycline, Ceftriaxone IV, Paracetamol, Ibuprofen and PRN Endone. Doctors are concerned that an abscess may have formed in the fallopian tubes and have discussed with Milly of the potential need for a laparoscopy. Milly is upset and worried.
