Problem: Potential Child Abuse and Mandated Reporting
Directions:
You'll get the opportunity to consider challenging student cases involving potential abuse and think about how you would approach intervening with the clients and whether reporting is required.
Read through and then pick two of the scenarios to respond to with the following:
In few paragraphs for each scenario answer:
What are relevant NASW core values and ethical standards?
As a social worker, how would you intervene? Is this a reportable situation? Share your decision-making process. Need Assignment Help?
Are there other resources the student/family could benefit from?
How can you continue to support the student in the school environment? What would your future relationship/contact with the student/family look like?
Case Scenario 1| Marie
Marie is a 4th grader, cries sometimes in class, and says she wishes someone would pay attention to her. She has shared with her teacher that her mom and grandma (who lives with them) always seem stressed about something and they yell at her a lot. You don't know her well, and she comes to talk to you one day but closes up quickly and seems hesitant to share. What do you do?
Case Scenario 2 | Lakita
Lakita is an 8th-grade student, who wears provocative clothing (has been sent home to change a couple of times), seems to like attention from the boys, and was caught in the teacher's lounge performing oral sex on another student in her class. You know her mother is a dancer, there are several uncles that live with them in a small apartment, and sometimes she has shared that mom has multiple boyfriends in and out of the house. What do you do?
Case Scenario 3 | Desmond
Desmond is a 10th grader who has a very sweet and thoughtful personality. His mom died a year ago due to COVID and his stepfather is now raising the kids alone (17 yo brother, 10 yo sister, and his biological daughter who is 6 yo). He sometimes shares with you that he misses his mom and that he used to talk with her about everything. He seems to latch onto girls quickly and talks about how much he loves hugs from them. Two of his past girlfriends have shared that he asks them to send him nude pictures of them. A couple of times past girlfriends have told you that he shared with them that they don't have any food in the house. He also shared that his stepfather takes his biological daughter to McDonald's but doesn't get food for his other siblings and him. What do you do?
Case Scenario 4 | Tommy
Tommy should be graduating from high school this year, but he has missed a significant amount of school and struggles to turn in homework, so his grades are very low and he is failing 2 classes. He has been suspended for vaping in the bathroom several times, his mom is extremely difficult to get ahold of, and the few times she has been to the school she looks really rough. Some of the other students have shared that she parties with them on the weekends. Tommy's father is incarcerated for drug trafficking. What do you do?
