Position 2 mirrors such that they will reflect each other

Assignment: IMAGE & IMAGINATION

TECHNICAL EXPERIMENT 1

Compose one or more of the following experiments. Engage with the process until you achieve a result that you are happy with. Submit your image(s) to the "Technical Experiments" assignment tab in Canvas-submit as many samples as you think are relevant to the experiment, with the expectation that you may be asked to speak about the process. If you are not sure where to begin, consider that you may need to experiment with your camera, consult the Internet, go through some trial-and-error, and/or contact me for suggestions. Part of the challenge is trouble-shooting the process in order to come up with an image you are happy with.

• Infinity experiment. Position 2 mirrors such that they will reflect each other when seen by the camera. Find an interesting subject to insert into this context and take a picture. By "interesting" I mean a subject that in some way has a relationship to the optical play and can be used to anchor the idea behind your experiment.

• Shadow experiment. Shadows are a result of blocked light, but under certain circumstances they can show their own form of character, often distorting, undermining or challenging the subjects from which they grow. Using a strong light source, create a picture where the shadow takes on a life of its own.

• Focus experiment. Take the same picture twice, changing only the point of focus from one to the next. In the first picture, focus on something in the foreground and have the background out-of-focus. In the second picture, focus on something in the background and have the foreground out-of-focus. You will need to use a large aperture (small f-stop) for this experiment. I recommend a camera with manual focus.

As you take the images, also pay attention to the background, the lighting, and other elements of the picture that will help make your image unique. Try experimenting with the rule of thirds or other composition possibilities. Feel free to take creative liberties with the details, but please make sure your images are properly exposed and that the main subject of the picture is in sharp focus.
