Population cluster and transportation flow

I am looking for some help with the two points regarding South America. I have got to do a paper and presentation and want some guidance with just these two points:

1) Population clusters and transportation flows critical to the main industries on the continent. Point out relative size and significance to South America such as the significance of the Interstate Highway System to the trucking industry in the United States or the Siberian Railroad to parts of Asia.

2) Relative location of population clusters over 1 million (that is, SMSA, not city); ground, water, and air transportation networks between main population clusters (railroads, roads, major commercial airline routes), and major shipping routes (trucks, trains, planes and boats).

I want help making a solid outline and a few Scholarly references to build the foundation for this assignment.
