Polarity and salvation
A solvent is a liquid medium in which dissolved are known as solutes. Solvents are useful for storing species that would otherwise be in inconvenient states (e.g. gases) and for facilitating reactions that could otherwise be hard to carry out (e.g. ones having solids. The chemical and physical characteristics of a solvent are important in controlling what species dissolve easily, and what types of actions can be performed.
