Pneumonia
Pneumonia is an inflammatory process in which there is consolidation in lung caused by exudates filing the alveolar spaces. Gas exchange cannot take place in the consolidated areas and blood in shunted around the non-functioning alveoli.
Hypoxemia may occur depending on how much lung tissue is involved. Patients may develop pleural effusion and some times emphyema.
