Please compile a list of industrial minerals found and

Laboratory Objective -

This lab will introduce you to the diversity of terrestrially bound resources within the Province of Saskatchewan.

Assignment -

Examine the samples on display. Conducting YOUR own research and using some of the links provided in this handout answer the following questions:

1) Metallic ores and metallic commodities

a) What metallic commodities are produced from mining activities within Saskatchewan?

b) In which part of Saskatchewan do metallic ore deposits occur, give a list of five current metalliferous ore-deposit mines in Saskatchewan, noting their names, ownership, where they are and what they produce.

c) Give the ore or mineral name(s) for the following metal commodities: copper, zinc, nickel, iron & aluminum? Are there any that do not occur in Saskatchewan and why? NB: 'copper ore' gets zero marks!

2) Fuels and energy

a) What are/is the ore(s) of uranium, where and HOW in Saskatchewan is uranium mined?

b) The type (i.e. API gravity) of oil produced from reservoirs within Saskatchewan varies across the province. On a fully labeled map of Saskatchewan, prepared by YOU, show the oil producing areas of Saskatchewan and indicate what type of oil is produced in each of those areas?

c) Where is coal mined in Saskatchewan? What rank of coal occurs within Saskatchewan and what is the main use of coal in this Province? On the map you created for your answer to 2b, indicate where coal occurs and the location of all coal mines in Saskatchewan.

3) Industrial minerals and building materials

a) Please compile a list of industrial minerals found and exploited within Saskatchewan. Where do they occur!

b) What are the principal minerals that make up 'potash'?

c) Please give examples of four building material that originate from within Saskatchewan.

4) Rank in order of economic importance for the economy of Saskatchewan, the following commodities: copper, uranium, potash, oil, natural gas, gold and zinc. Please give the monetary value (as revenue per annum) to the Province and Saskatchewan's 'Rank' within Canada for the production of each resource. Data older than 2012 is NOT acceptable.

BONUS question - Are there other terrestrially bound resource(s) within the Province of Saskatchewan (i.e. not covered by the text or map or the above) that contribute towards the Provincial GDP (note: not soft wood lumber OR agricultural cash crops, pasta, potatoes, pigs, wheat, beer, Roughriders etc.....)?

Write a report on the activities of Crown Shred, using the structure indicated below. The report will be at least 500 words in length. You will want to supplement the tour information with a number of related references. Use the following headings:

Background - a paragraph discussing the details of the tour (date, location, tour guide's name, duration, what the tour covered).

Introduction - Generally introduce the kinds of waste streams that the facility handles, and the range of end uses that occur.

Discussion - Discuss each of the waste streams handled by Crown Shred. In your discussion examine the material characteristics, its source, handling and processing, and end use. Use of subheadings in your discussion is mandatory.

Conclusion - Some general concluding remarks regarding the facilities role in waste management in the province, and what you found interesting about the tour.

References - follow APA formatting.
