Pictorial modernism occurred in the early 20th century in a time of war when communication and transportation became more effective. Designers needed to maintain their attention, in order to keep communicating with the audience, since communication was a big problem. In turn they created this pictorial imagery, that can communicate more effectively with audiences. Pictorial modernism was influenced by modern art movements: De Stijl, Bauhaus, cubism, suprematism, constructivism, and dada, as well as the art-deco style.  With these influences, artists were able to use these avant-garde strategies in order to effectively advertise a particular product.

By using modernist strategies, designers were able to effectively fix the communication problem there was with companies and their audience. E. McKnight Kauffer poster for London's underground railway system effectively explain the reason for the Railways function by using cubist, art deco, Bauhaus and futurist ideals with a balance of structure that signified a man and a machine as the main source of power for the Underground. Austin Cooper was able to successfully create his poster for the London underground by using an enticing slogan, as well as his art deco and cubist ideals, bold colors and hierarchy in this structure that attracted people to use the system. Cassandre in turn used cubist and art deco as well but added scale, texture, shaped and form to united the whole poster as a whole and in turn effectively promote the ocean liner.
