Introduction to Sociology- Term Essay

At the start of the Fall 2017 semester it will be legal to carry firearms onto college campuses in Texas. This new law is known as "Campus Carry".

The topic for this Fall term is "Campus Carry". The objective for this paper is to utilize your own critical thinking skills in an organized and argumentative analysis.

This paper is meant to give you the opportunity to examine your own opinion, use sociology, and envision the sociological imagination by putting it into action.

Be persuasive, be personal, and follow directions closely! This paper will be compromised of three parts: the personal, a quantitative analysis, and the sociological.

The Personal- This part of the paper will be your personal opinion of campus carry and a full explanation of your opinion. This means you need to tell me what you think and WHY. Explain yourself. You will also need to include at least three sentences that address the opposition and why you think that argument is invalid/not right.

Quantitative Analysis- Use one of the graphs provided in the PowerPoint to support your argument using at least 100 words- remember to paste the graph into your paper. Tell me what the numbers are saying! This section must be a strictly numerical analysis that supports your position.

The Sociological- This part asks you to put your sociology to work. You will pick one sociological theory that moves your paper from the personal into the social world (social responsibility). Pick one theory and define it using the definition provided (copy and paste it from below).

Explain why you used this theory and how it supports your sociological transition. Your transition will need to illustrate your social responsibility- in other words, how does campus carry affect your community?

Will you engage with your community differently? What is your responsibility to your community? You are responsible for providing a connection to social responsibility. Lastly, explain how the classroom will change following campus carry.

Formatting:

• 700-750 words TOTAL. No more. No less.

• This word count will include a 100-word analysis of the graph.

• If you go under or over the 750 words I will automatically deduct 25 points from your paper for not following directions.

• Graph: Pick ONE graph and use it to support your position. This section needs to be NUMERICAL.

• You will only be allowed to cite/reference from three sources: your textbook, one of the graphs provided, and Senate Bill 11.

• Textbook: Only use your textbook to cite information pertaining to the sociological theory.

• Senate Bill 11: Do not overuse this bill. Use it sparingly and to only support your position. Do not analyze the bill.

• You can only choose ONE sociological theory.

• If you chose more than one or one that is not listed below I will automatically deduct 20 points.

• Choose either MLA or APA style.

• If you incorrectly cite or do not cite at all you will automatically lose 5 points.

• Font: Size 12 Times New Roman.

• Save the file as follows: LAST NAME, FIRST NAME, INTRO TO SOCIO- PAPER.

Theories (pick one and copy-paste into your paper):

Structural Functionalism: Structural functionalism argues that society has structures that function in order to maintain social order and social stability.

Conflict Theory: Conflict theory argues that conflict is inevitable in society because there is inequality (power inequality, economic inequality, resource inequality, etc.). This conflict leads to social change.

Symbolic Interactionism: Symbolic interactionism argues that individuals in a society have shared meanings of symbols and values and their interactions are based on those shared meanings.

Your paper should look similar to this:

Paragraph 1- Short introduction, your personal opinion, opposition's position Paragraph 2- Personal explanation of your position- KEEP THIS

PERSONAL! Why do you believe what you believe? Explain yourself!

Paragraph 3- Pick one graph and explain it completely in 100 words (how does it support your opinion?). Copy and paste the graph into your paper

Paragraph 4- Sociological explanation, sociological theory and provided definition (quote definition directly from textbook), explanation of theory and how it explains your opinion

Paragraph 5- Conclusion References page
